Clearly, I am having a midlife crisis. Rather than getting involved with inappropriate men (bad) or getting a red Ferrari (can't drive anyway) I thought I'd get a tattoo on my next birthday. In the past I've gone along for moral support with no less than 5 friends, always thinking secretly "Hahaha! You'll never get me under the needle!" as they groaned their way through it.
Anyway, what should it be? And where?

Don't go for somewhere cheesy and girly like ankle, shoulder or lower back. Get it on your arm like an old-school tattoo. And design it yourself: something that means something to you personally. Remember you're going to have it when you're 64.
Can't you have a tattoo on someone else? Then it won't matter once you're over your crisis.
An oriental dragon. Anywhere.
A picture of Susan Boyle.
On your arse.
TB, it needs to be a bit hidden, because of the day job.
Arabella, ha! Are you allowed to tattoo other people though?
Hey, Artog. My friend has an oriental dragon, very nice it is too.
Tim, thanks for that, very helpful.
I imagine that you've considered the issue that getting a tattoo will affect where you can be buried.
Tee hee! Only you, GSE... No I hadn't, really. But as I will be dead by then I probably won't care. Cremate me and scatter my ashes from the top of Parliament Hill, that'll do...
just don't get one on your face please. HATE on the knuckles should be avoided too (my brother has that one).
One I saw a pic of recently that I quite liked was a pair of fancy bows, one on each hip bone, so it looked like decorated knickers
Aw, I was thinking maybe of a nice cobweb pattern on my face... Did I ever tell you about the skinhead with SNIKS tattooed on his forehead? It said SNIKS because he'd done it himself in the mirror. I like the idea of the fancy pants.
I should be grading papers. Instead I'm inside, missing out on the sunshine, but avoiding work on the internet.
Does your brother not have LOVE on the other knuckle, then? That's harsh. Did he get the idea from Robert Mitchum in the Night of the Hunter? (one of the greatest films ever made...)
I rather doubt it. He went through a phase of being a racist skinhead.
One friend had washing instructions tattooed on his wrist. Another had Emily Strange tattooed on hers. I instantly thought "Well, they look quite cool *now*..."
Please, for the love of god, nothing oriental or celtic. So cliched. Also see barbed wire.
Tattoos only really work for me as a marker of something you've gone through, rather than trying to use the tattoo as something in itself. If I were you, I'd buy some nice shoes or clothes or or jewellery: something you can take off when you're bored of it.
To quote Lisa Simpson: "How rebellious... in a conformist sort of way."
Oh well, at least it was only a phase.
Del, 'a marker of something you've gone through'... I shall get a large frieze on my back of me being chased out of my home by slavering Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Excellent! Sorted!
A fox, because you're foxy.
Thanks, my love. (I do like foxes.) Not as foxy as you - I wish I had the Look of the Fox. Speaking of which, look at these beautiful fox cub photos on Flickr...

Let's face it Annie, you haven't got the bottle to get yourself a tramp stamp.
Istvanski, are you implying that I'm a coward? Whatever gave you that impression?
Mehhh!! what if you end up hating it. it hurts you know - bad! anyhow I will go with you for moral support. I just want you to really think it through - remember I now very much dislike mine... sorry I sound like a mother here.
Get the West Ham crest done on both of your knockers! :D
I quite like inside forearm, but obviously that's a no-no for work.
As for what to get... well, I dunno. But I reckon that if you don't already know what to get, then you probably shouldn't be getting one. I've known people to go into the parlour and sit flicking through a catalogue, which just seems wrong.
I know Sar - but I'm older than you were when you did it, I've had more time to think about it.
Rad, see, that's a specific image and a specific place, that's the kind of help I expect from the bloggers. Just for sticking to the brief, I'm going to go with your idea!
Emordino, you mean I might end up with Yosemite Sam or I LOVE MUM?
You do realise I'm going to want proof? ;)
Actually I really like t'other Annie's suggestion.
Don't do it.
I am a lot older than you (but no wiser.) I like the "buy shoes" option.
Aaargh. I got the full stop inside the bracket. I will die now.
Anne, maybe I should just get a transfer like the kids.
Ohhhh, I LOVE MUM would be brilliant. And an anchor on the other arm. No, screw it, an anchor on both forearms. And start smoking a corncob pipe.
(All these Annes and Annies are terribly confusing. I demand more sensible names, like John and Mary.)
I saw a white tattoo the other day - it was beautiful, small and classy. I want the exact same thing but that's entirely unoriginal so I am having the exact same dilemma - what and where?
I was thinking of one too, Lottie. Some interesting discussion of them on this Flickr group:

How about a tribute to the five people you have accompanied to have their tattoos, like a version of Mount Rushmore - hee hee!
