Sweepstake

They came round demanding money for a sweepstake at work today, I understand there's some kind of football tournament going on. I got Brazil. Are they any good?

(Just kidding. Actually I got Ukraine. Are they any good?)

You could have done a lot worse, Ukraine are many people's 'dark horse' selection. With Shevchenko (the recent £30m Chelsea signing) upfront they are always going to be dangerous and have a relatively easy group in comparison with some.

Just be thankful you didn't draw Angola.

I always back the underdog. Come on you England!

I got Germany in ours.

Prolix, we like the dangerous dark horses, they're the best kind. I remember reading about Shevchenko - £30m? *chokes on coffee*

G, I would never have known you were a patriot.

Adrian - bah.

I can't choose anything but Poland. After infamous match with Columbia (I bet you seen at least one action from this one) I just can't (why should I choose another country but my own one anyway?).

something missing there ;)
I just can't do anything else :)

Yeah, I'm quite torn as i don't really want DE to win, but I'd also like to win the pool money which is not something to scorn.

I'm in the same boat Adrian, Germany were my pick as well. Bang goes my plan of cheering on Costta Rica tonight. Ho hum.

That's Costa Rica with just the one 't'. Bah.

I'd rather be betting on the ethnic/national stereotypes from the commentators.

Ruthless efficiency... check... natural exuberance... check... plucky display... check... cheating, diving, fouling, handballing, cokesniffing, greasy, pretending-to-be-scrap-metal-merchants-so-they-could-land-on-South-Georgia REJOICE! REJOICE bring back national service...

That last one isn't Ukraine, btw

I predict (with my superior soccer knowledge) that Australia will make a surprising impact at this world cup.

At least, that's what the Australian media has been telling me. Are there other teams?

Ukraine aren't that much cop, but they're well in the running for best-looking team. Shevchenko actually IS sex on legs. Or at least handsomity on legs. The Czech Republic is my Slavic dark horse bet. I should, as a loyal immigrant, be rooting for Deutschland of course.

According to numerous Irish Radio stations, the country that Irish people have to support in the absence of our national team is Poland. This may be due to the huge number of Polish immigrants that have moved to Ireland in recent years.

Go Poland!

(what's the bets Ecuador will win tonight though? I mean seriously.)

Good bet, Matt.

Guess what I would choose... easy, heh?

Ah, Shyha, never mind hey.

Adrian, who do you want to win?

Prolix, as one who knows absolutely bugger all about football, can I ask how come everyone is so down on the Latin American teams?

Tim, ha! So true. I love the commentators, especially when they're ex-footballers, men of action who seem to find words a bit unwieldy. (you lost me with the scrap metal reference?)

Sarah, I understand there are a few, but with your superior soccer knowledge I will go straight down the bookies and bet on Australia.

BiB, Shevchenko actually IS sex on legs - now this is exactly the approach to sport that I can relate to. Don't root for Deutschland! They're too ruthlessly efficient.

Soz, Matt. Yes yes, Lucien, it's easy to mock - hindsight is always 20/20 as they say. By the way, who is Ann Coulter?

Dcver, a wild guess - Portugal? ;-)

why Latin Americans? Because of the beauty of this game. It's a ball-dance :)

Btw. I would like to see some teams winning (not because of their opponents but because I like to see 'weak' teams winning): Australia, Japan, Angola etc.
