A boring question post

But techies, it could be your chance to shine.

My McAfee PC protection is about to expire. I do not like them because they debited fifty quid from my credit card without asking for confirmation and without any warning around Christmas time when I was brokety broke, (which if I could be arsed to look into, I'm pretty sure is not legal, whether they have stored your credit card details or not.) Anybody can recommend other (just as good and hopefully cheaper) PC protection?

I'm currently running Avast anti-virus which is free but may not be as good as some others. Here's a very recent PC Pro review of several packages which you can help make a choice. It includes at least 3 free packages and a range of other prices. The best rated, unsurprisingly, is neither Norton or McAfee.

Why don't you procure a skull'n'crossbones version of McAfee PC protection - just to get your own back?

Istvanski, is there one? That would be perfect...

Anonymous, tell you what, why don't you BUY ME ONE? *mutters to self, tsk, bloody smug self-satisfied mac users*

Cheers, Dcver, will check it out.

LOL @ mac retort.

Don't really have a suggestion (I've used both McAfee & Norton) - but I've noticed that this debiting card without asking is very common among online purveyors. The ISP I was using did the same thing a couple of months ago. I've found they're good about refunding the cash if you request it, but it's still bloody annoying.

Some leather oil and a small cattle prod.

One reason I no longer use either McAfee or Norton is because, compared to other just as good (and invariably cheaper) products, they are huge system and resource hogs and slow my PC right down. I've had considerably better performace since moving away and getting it off my system. So even if you do go for a skull 'n crossbones version, you may not be better off.

Clamwin is open source - which means it's completely free with no strings attached: http://www.clamwin.com/

I use it and it works great.

Alda, hmm, cheeky sods that they are.
Imagine if Figleaves did the same - 'we reckon that the elastic must have gone in that bra you bought 6 months ago - so we'll charge you fifty quid and send you a new one!' Actually, I'd quite like that...

Arabella, kinky!

Dragon, very useful to know, thank you.

LC, thank you. And oh noes, too much choices. Watch as I deliberate over which to go for, for so long that in the meantime my computer gets eaten up by virulent viruses...
