Stick it on

This weekend I am going to Stick It On. The moment of truth is on me - my musical tastes will be held up to judgement by an audience of my peers, who will either hold up big placards which say "CHOON!" in approval, and cheer and applaud and go wild, or... the dancefloor will magically empty, the tumbleweed will roll on by, and I'll have to hang myself out of shame.

Though I harbour secret fantasies of being a DJ, Stick It On makes it a bit too easy - you don't have to hunch over the decks, all cool and impressive with your headphones on, as they line everything up for you. But I'm not sure what you're meant to do - deprived of these tools of the trade, people tend to bob about looking proud and slightly foolish behind the mixing desk.

So help me out here - what killer tunes should I include in my 15 minutes of fame?

Crikey - that sounds like pressure to me:) You're brave. Does it have to be dance music or just anything?
I always like Lenny Kravitz - Are You Going To Go My Way to help me get on the dancefloor...

Something I'd have to avoid like the plague. Alternatively, a competition to be the quickest clear the dancefloor would be held. My music tastes are a bit too loud for general consumption.

Apparently you need a DJ name 'fo you bad self"...

Blimey - you're brave. I wouldnt know where to start

Oh ho ho, here we go.

Ok, the number, fail safe, all time best fill the dancefloor tune that everyone in the whole universe loves is...

Deeelite - Groove Is In The Heart.

But it depends what you want really. Is it respect or popularity? It is the balance betwixt these two points that defines a great DJ.

Annie, I can't believe you are doing this. You are too brave. But, yes, Del is right. Groove is in the Heart is perfect. And a brilliant song.

I'm impressed this is something I'd never do. Only I could love my music.

Ooh, you are soo brave! Also, I really want to go to this.

I'd put on Gina G 'Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit'. And the Dan Hartman version of 'Relight My Fire'. And that fantastic acid remix of 'Personal Jesus' I had on my blog a few months ago but have now tragically lost.

No, I'd be rubbish, wouldn't I?

And yes - what will be your DJ name?

You should be called DJ Spininsky

Ha! Emsa that is brilliant. YES!
Anyhow - anything 80's is also good - Human League or Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy... dance version.

Ok, I've had a think about this now. If I had to play 5 tracks to be both popular, but also not really cheesy, this is what I would play.

Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough
Salt n Pepa - Push It
Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance
Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Right Round
Deeelite - Groove Is In The Heart

Not desperately original, but everyone knows them and everyone loves them.

I was distressed to learn that the first (well, to my knowledge anyway) appearance of DJ Spininsky will be taking place in Brighton, and that I am therefore unable to attend, ironically as I'm supposed to be in Hackney on Saturday night.

Bugger.

Ooh, you are all too good at this. The trick is to take a big crowd of your friends who will cheer and support you no matter what you play.

The last time I went Billy it could have been a friend of yours - he managed to empty the dancefloor after a couple of tracks.

Dragon, it's your chance to impose your taste AND YOUR VERY LOUD MUSIC on people.

Thanks Sar and Em, great name!

Aw, Patroclus, what a shame... can't believe I missing you in my manor... they do have this night in London sometimes, at the Albany in Great Portland Street. Hmm, maybe we should have a blogmeet there next time if people are up for it?

Del, superb. Would it be fair to lift it from you? (My real MJ favourite is 'Wanna Be Starting Something' but it does go on for hours.)

Del said...

Lift all you want. And obviously substitute tracks you really want to play. I'd just recommend starting and ending really strongly. It's those 2 tracks people will remember. And play stuff that girls will dance to, cos then the boys will dance too.

I'll shut up now.

I like the Albany - I've been there twice but both times managed to get hideously drunk by mistake.

You should play nothing but Aphew Twin and Britney Spears - that'd be quite a set!

What about Milkshake?
Maximum Choonage there.

The Kelis song, not mama mama me me me me more milkshake!

Or the creepy band at the end of Toddworld. (cbeebies afficionados will know who I mean.)

Theme From S-Express - S-Express

Too Much Too Young - Specials

Paridise City - GnR
Or Sweet Child o Mine. You could get everyone air guitaring! :D

Solid gold advice from DJ Del.

Our friends used to run a club night in the Albany Billy. They played great music but everyone was FAR too cool to actually dance.

Rad, ooh yes indeed, Kelis. Del did have a fab version of Sweet Child O Mine on a podcast, who was it by Del? I'm kind of sad that I missed the air guitar championships on recently, that would have been a sight to see...

The Sweet Child Of Mine cover was by Flatpack, and I think it was the Linus Loves remix. It was a limited white label though, so it might be a bit of a pain to track down. Drop me an email if you want a copy.

a 'limited white label'? I'm not worthy!
