Where to stay in NY?

Now then. Are any Americans or ex-pats reading? Or well travelled people? Over here, a B&B is a cheap institution for people who can't afford hotels. Usually in the region of £35 a night. (though the one we stayed in in St Ives, was dead posh, posher than some hotels I've stayed in, it had Phillipe Starck bedlamps, a huge ensuite bathroom with marble tiling and an enormous flatscreen TV.) Over there, it appears that they are in the region of $125 a night, (and some are up to $275 in low season ) which is a lot. Where do you stay if you want somewhere cheap?

There's a large Y somewhere round about 44th St.

Don't whatever you do stay there.

I'd honestly be amazed if you find anything safe under $125 in NY.

About twelve years ago I stayed in a hostel in Chelsea. It was ok. And near the Chelsea Hotel. No idea if it's still any good though.

When me and my fried Wies parted company in the states he went on to stay in that hostel in Chelsea and said it was okay, just like all other hostels. That was last October. Dorm rooms are about 30 quid a night.

I mean bucks, not quid

We went through this last summer ... all we could find in Manhattan on six weeks' notice were hotel rooms at around $250 a night. We ended in a SUPERB bed and breakfast in Brooklyn - it cost about $150 a night for a double.

On another note, have you considered home exchange? That's probably the cheapest way to go. We just had an enquiry from Manhattan ...

(Laughs hollowly at how Americans might react to a home exchange with La Slaminsky, given her current circumstances.)

I hear rumours that accommodation prices are falling a bit there.

Last time I went (ahem, the ONLY time I have been) I stayed in The Gershwin which seemed to have a good range of prices, including hostelly type stuff if you book in advance.

Let us know how you get on, as I'm hoping to go again in September if I still have a job.

Hmm, now that might be the answer - home exchange with an American who owns a gun.

Yah it's hard to fine Annie - I stayed here with Dave once and it was nice, clean and it was worth the money but it was a bit expensive. Good location etc.

When are you going?? Can you stay with J?

No no, no more hostels, I'm too old for it, especially dorms. We stayed in Chelsea too, here:

and
http://www.chelsealodge.com/

They were nice, but v tiny rooms for more than a 2 day stay.

Sar, that does look nice. I'm trying to find a compromise between a hostel and a hotel, you'd think a B&B would be it...

Alda, do you remember the name of your B&B? I will be in Brooklyn.

The Gershwin looks good Boz - will check it out.

I would love a home exchange, in fact that was one reason I wanted to buy a flat, but I'm having neighbour problems at the moment, Alda...

Unless you want to feel like you're in an episode of Hill Street Blues, I don't think a cheap hotel in NYC is a good idea.
There's a touristy looking place in Theaterland called The Herald Square. Bit of a find. I've stayed in very clean and well kept rooms; helpful staff and it's a very good location for late-night larks or shopping. Check it out and you might get a good deal.
When ya going?!

The Larchmont - mixed reviews on travel advisor but i stayed there with Boyf in 2007 and it was fine for a cheapie hotel. It was unfortunate that they were having a problem with the hot water (there was none) for the duration of our stay - but we were allowed to shower at the Y round the road. Also note, has shared bathrooms and toilets. If you book, request a street facing room as they are nicer and its a quiet street. http://www.larchmonthotel.com/. Cost $125 per night double room.

Really good location, borders greenwich village, short walk to Union Sq, Washington Sq.

Also in the area Union Square coffee shop - unique bar, great food, good for celeb spotting.

Also- a search on twitter reveals this: NYC Deals of the Week: Night $114, Dylan $120, Algonquin $132, Azure $142, Mela $142. Plus, SoHo Grand and Tribeca Grand from $244.

Ooh, thank you Kirses, very helpful. I like Union Square a lot, we went to the Union Square Cafe last time, which was lovely. My friends stayed in the SoHo Grand when they got married and we went for drinks there after the wedding, it was dead posh.
