Fantasy shopping

If you were to buy a laptop, what laptop would you buy?

Not that I can buy anything for a while. Not shiny toys, not plane tickets, nor shoes, nothing.

But you know, if I was to buy a laptop, which one? (And is second-hand worth it?)

Hit me with your geek-fu.

I posted this very question. Almost everyone, specially those whose techno views I take seriously, said Dell. So I did. And it was very good advice, as I bloody love mine, and their service is tops, too.

I've been eyeing up the Asus EEE PC for a while - super-tiny and super-cheap. Not very powerful but that's not a problem if you're only using it for web browsing and blogging and the like.

If we're talking proper fantasy shopping though, I would love a tablet PC. Well sexy. A friend of mine picked one up new for 800 euro, so they're not outrageously expensive as laptops go.

I love the Macs and recommend to all and sundry. They are pricier than your PC laptops though, so in those circumstances a second hand machine, with only one careful lady owner, might be a good shout.

Yes, you won't go far wrong with Dell. It's not a particularly imaginative choice but they are reliable as hell, reasonably priced, and they're not going out of business anytime soon.

I don't suggest second hand unless it's almost new. You want to get a good 4-5 years life out of it and you won't get that from something that's already a couple of years old.

Buy as high a spec. as you can bear to afford - and don't be fooled by most 'special offers' which are usually just entry level models which are reaching the end of their shelf life.

Finally, and sorry if (any of) this might sound patronising, make sure you really want a laptop. Do you definitely have plans for something that's portable, or do you just like them because they're small and cute. An equivalent desktop is much cheaper and will have a better keyboard, monitor, upgradability and performance.

Keep well away from anything in PC World.

A MacBook Pro. I intend to buy one sometime in the next year.

And contrary to what the previous poster said, I'd definitely go for a laptop. I have both, but hardly ever use the desktop (it's been usurped by my daughter, lucky her!) With the laptop I can move from my desk to the kitchen table to the living room couch (which is where I'm sitting right now) or to a local (or not so local) coffee shop. Laptops rule.

I'm writing this on a Macbook pro. Expensive, but it beats every PC i've ever had into a cocked hat

Apple do some good deals on refurbished and second hand stuff.

Mac mac mac mac mac mac mac. Wouldn't buy second hand mac or any laptop for that matter as tiny or no warranty. Lots of Macs were fitted with faulty logic boards over the last 3-4 years - buy new if you can. NEVER set foot in PC World unless you intend to dirty protest and/or burn it down.

Mac. It just blimmin' is, right.

I once went to PC World, and found myself having to explain some of the technical details to the salesbloke.

Dell sucks. My BF has one of the EEE PC's and it goes everywhere with him. The ultimate must have for the obsessed blogger.

The MAC Book Air is my dream machine. It's just so pretty!

I've never owned a Mac but I have coveted the sleek little MacBook Air since it first appeared, on aesthetics alone.

I have no geek fu, but The Husband is as happy with one of those ultra thin Macs as I would be with a kitten.
I know.... buy a kitten!

Macs are nice but not as infallible and user-friendly as the evangelists will have you believe.

I'd say that on balance PCs are slightly better value, but then I think I have more patience when it comes to the less user friendly aspects of running a windows machine.

I found Dell's service and whatnot to be fine.

If you choose a Mac, just remember that you'll also have to get new friends when the old ones get bored of listening to you constantly carping on about it and berating them for not getting one too.

Oh, and don't forget these words of wisdom.

I bought a Dell laptop simply because I could get it in yellow. I´m not a MAC fan although I know this is a very un-hip thing to say

Oh Emma - That's so un-hip! Shun!!!

Thanks, people. Very, very confused now.

*hangs head in (un-hip) shame*!

Once you go Mac, you don't go back. I'm a recent convert and I'm now the happy bitch of Steve Jobs.

That said, I used to work for Dell, in the very, very distant past, and would still recommend one. Buy direct, don't buy second-hand (there's hardly any point these days with the ridiculous offers) and get as much RAM as you can fit in it.

Oh, and once you get it, see if someone can let you have a copy of XP 'cos Vista just gobbles up resources and runs like a blind, limping, one-legged mange-hound.

MAC MAC MACKITTY MAC!

I use em, and I love em! :D They are pricey though. You're looking at £700.00 for the entry point macbook. Worth it in my opinion but if cash is tight (and let's face it, you have a mortgage now) then a sub £500.00 PC laptop will probably suit you just fine.

Let's face it, all you want it for is writing letters and looking at porn on the internet. YOu don't need to spend a fortune. ;)

Macs are evil. Mac users are like the Scientologists of the laptop world. I won't get one on principle.

Most people seem happy with their Dells. I use Sony Vaios at work. But they're expensive. And I'd agree with King of Scurf, you'll get much better value and life out of a desktop. But hey, I want a laptop too, cos they all tiny and cute and that.

And all that said, of course, it depends what you want to do with it.

Another mac vote here. I've used both and macs are bloody wonderful. Plus nobody ever bothers to write viruses for them...
