Sushi

It's nice, it can be special, but if you haven't had sushi in a while, do you really crave it? People ask you (and sometimes you ask yourself) how you can go this long without it, but there's nothing like indifferent sushi, unless there's quality stuff on hand, sometimes you're better off without it.

Some days though, you find yourself thinking 'I MUST HAVE SUSHI NOW, RIGHT AWAY, OR I WILL DIE.'

(What do I do on those days? Chinese takeout.)

I had it once in Tokyo at 5.30 in the morning in a sushi/sashimi bar next to the Tsukiji fish market, when the fish was so fresh it was still leaping about. It was stunningly good.
Unfortunately, I am now completely spolied and nothing I've had in the UK has been anywhere near as good, so I tend to avoid it.

I second cluracan. Also Tsukiji, possibly the same bar. The best breakfast I've ever had.

And nowadays, any sushi I eat is... meh...

Be careful what you wish for.

I would love to try sushi. Unfortunately none of my friends are into it so I wouldn't know where to start. It's quite a pickle.

Never been able to go back to sushi after a sake-addled experience with sea urchin and raw quails eggs.

I would suggest the salmon sashimi set at Ramen Seto on Kingley St except I suspect that this is metaphorical.

Order takeaway with Deliverance... they do sushi and will deliver to your area pretty sure.

I wish I liked sushi - it always looks interesting. But the smell of it makes me want to clean surfaces.

Eschewing the crappy stuff doesn't really make me stop craving it. I've had the Japanese Fish Market breakfast- I've also had excellent sushi other places as well. I find that when I don't have it on a regular basis, if I go someplace that has any remote chance for 'decent' sushi- I must must must have it.

I must have it!!!!!

arabella...If the sushi you are trying smells, then you are right to give it a miss...proper sushi doesn't smell!

Sushi no. Wasabi, fuck yeah!

Cluracan, I am jealous. I want to go to Tokyo.

Tim, show off.

Emordino, I'm not familiar with Dublin so don't know what food chains you have over there, over here they have little takeaway sushi boxes in Marks & Spencers & posher branches of Tescos (though Tim and Cluracan would probably poohpooh it.)

Ms Hush Hush - you are sophisticated!

GSE - ha! Phew, I thought, nobody has seen through my lame metaphor so far... Busted.

Bad Sar, oh if only there was home delivery for this... well I guess there is, everything's available to order online these days.

Arabella - it looks so pretty too.

Hi Kopaylopa - how come everybody else has been to Japan?

Billy, wasabi is good for you. It scares away bad germs. And makes your eyes water.

For some reason I am imagining the first paragraph of this post sung (or rather deadpanned) to the tune of 'West End Girls'.

I had some *amazing* sushi once in a Japanese hotel restaurant on - I think - Tavistock Place. Mmmmm.

Tavistock *Square*. That's it, I'm officially no longer a Londoner! And anyway, it turns out it was on Southampton Row.

Oh hec, I wonder what I'm experiencing, Clurucan? cos I've been taken to some well regarded sushi places on the west coast (CA). I know I don't get any salivation at all when I look at the dishes. Quite odd, because I love my grub. I'll investigate further!

I spend too much time on a chat board where for some reason buried in the mists of time it is referred to as fondue.

Um, not sushi, but Sarah Haskins!

I adore sushi and have to ration myself, or else I'd just eat it every day. And I don't really do proper posh sushi very often, just takeaway stuff in Noho and the packs from Tesco. Totally addicted to the little packs of Edamame too. Yum!

I've been eating dull sushi nearly every day at work thanks to a nearby sushi bar. Not much variety there but the Miso soup is passable. Makes me want to go to the Bluewater sushi bar.
