bubblegum

This mix tape, number 7, is dedicated to Billy, Llewtrah, GSE, the Whales and Rockmother, whom I met at the Dove (A very old London pub, where Charles I used to meet Nell Gwynne for a Guinness or two, very nice, on the river, with lots of fireplaces and a riverside terrace, and LOUD SHOUTY ANTIPODEANS IN THE CORNER). I raise a glass to you.

And apologies to Realdoc, so sorry I missed you yet again - it was the bastard engineering works on the Central Line. Please come back to London again...

This is a mini mix tape, featuring my guilty pleasures, ie mostly bubblegum pop* - tunes that are sweet, lightweight and containing no nutritional value - specially made to combat the grey January weather ...

* and thinking about it, not sure any of you will be v keen on this - soz.

Trouble - Shampoo
Shampoo basically came into existence and enjoyed their moment in the spotlight because most music writers were dirty old men. Still, good tune.

I Want Candy - Bow Wow Wow
This is the Kevin Shield's remix - can't you tell? No, me neither. Anyway, Bow Wow Wow also came into existence because of a dirty old man too (Malcolm McLaren chatting up 15 year old Annabella Lwin - hey baby, I can make you a star!) Still, again, good tune.

Jerk It Out - The Caesars
I know nothing about them - anybody care to fill me in? I've got a feeling they're Swedish.

Sugarbabes - Freak Like Me
Sugarbabes remind me of the hard girls at school - you wouldn't want to get on their wrong side - but they make great pop.

Toxic - Britney - well, you know of my love for Britney. Her finest moment - so far. I live in hope of a comeback.

Hurrah! I'm off to a) have a bitch fight on the dancefloor a la Sugababes b) dress up as an air-hostess who's really a super-spy who's really just wanting to get back at her boyfriend for, like OMG, looking at another woman and c) listen to this. It sounds ace.

Oh, by the way, The Caesers are indeed Swedish. Hurrah for Swedopop.

Really sorry I missed you annie. I couldn't really stay very long because of the convention thingy. Next time I will endeavour to be better organised.

The Caesars ended up being one hit wonders after this song appeared in an iPod Shuffle advert. That kind of thing will probably become more common now that the top forty can include downloads. I'm waiting for that Laurel And Hardy song from the Orange campaign to get to number one!

"...but the night-bus never came..." Having fun listening right now.

hurrah! Jolly good, everyone. It is a bit short as L needed to use the computer when I was making it.

Betty, what will the top 40 be like now they're including downloads? It'll be anarchy!

The top 40 will now be BRILLIANT. I can't wait to see what kind of random nonsense (or, just possibly, actual decent music) starts appearing in its hallowed ranks. The whole thing is now a complete and utter free-for-all - you don't even need to have a record deal any more! Fabulous!

Actually, Annie, when you're done with starting an internet rumour (will think about that), let's see if we can get a song in the charts!

Chart-fixing... I like it...

Ooh how exciting - going to download now. Thank you for including me in the dedication - it was lovely to meet you too. Hopefully we can meet again at some point and I'll get there on time (hopefully) next time.

Annie!

Thinking about bubblegum, have you heard of the Norwegian popstar called Annie! She has an ACE song called Chewing Gum.

If not, I must send it to you tout suite.

You're very welcome Rockmother. Maybe we can all go to the Big Gay Pop Quiz again (so I won't be relying only on Billy, who fluffed the question on Hawkwind, tsk...)

Hey Adrian - that sounds fab - she's not the Show Me Love one that you were writing about? Pleeeease do send me, I love getting music in the mail...

Adrian said...

Nope, Show Me Love lady is Robyn, and she's Swedish and ace. I shall dig out Annie and send on tout suite.
