Why are writers sexy?

Writers are not nice people really. I reckon to really be a good writer you have to be a bit of a cold-hearted bastard, at heart. Every one I've known has had that slight, clinical distance from other people, seeing them as good source material. Hmmm.

Um. Apart from anyone we know who is a writer, of course (she said, backtracking hastily.)

I do think that, if you write about personal subjects, which most writers should, you are somewhat restrained by the knowledge that the people in your life will read what you have written. Being a cold hearted bastard may relieve this restraint, since you won't care.

LC - yes it is a tautology, I did it on purpose, wanna make something of it?

Tim, you cold-hearted bastard. I told you (and the internet) in confidence...

Not yet Rosie, hence frustration.

Destructor - right, I do wonder sometimes where the impulse to write comes from though, when people HAVE to do it and damn the consequences.

My writing is restrained by fear of what everyone will think, as Dan says. I'm also of the opinion that although writing should be personal it needn't be definitively (or even recognisably) so once you've broken it down and reconstructed it to your needs. Nicking some of your neighbour's philosophy for a character is useful, but as someone who writes mostly for the sake of it I don't really see much value in recreating your neighbour wholesale. I suppose a really interesting neighbour might sell books, and maybe being cold-hearted helps in that respect.

As they say, copying from one source is plagiarism, copying from many is research.

Speak for yourself, bumface. And don't stand so close to me...

I think mant of those who write analyse life more intensely than most people. They wrestle with the problems of life. And think too much... I know i do.

I was thinking mainly of fiction writers (though actually journalists can be just as bad, seeing people lives & painful experiences as potential articles which translate into money- ker-ching!)

In fact, I can think of a Posy Simmonds cartoon which I'm going to post...

I would venture partly - more or less - an opinion, and dare I say an observation.
A writer worth his salt brings to life characters with-in, rather than those with-out.
If not yo're only ripping off the Blood, and the Holy Grail;-)

Hi Cyrano - fair enough. I'm on bit of a downer with those of an artistic bent at the moment.

Interesting thread. That said I'm too aloof to comment.
