Dalston or Leytonstone?

Can't quite believe I'm on the move again.

My granny grew up in Dalston. Not that that should influence your decision in any way, but it's all I can contribute to the subject, never having lived north of the river.

Dalston - handy for Vietnamese food

I have an irrational prejudice against Dalston (it may be rational, but I doubt it) so I say Leytonstone.

Dalston -a bit dodgy, but fairly close to Stoke Newington to the north, Islington to the west and Brick Lane to the south.

Leytonstone - not close to anything good, you may as well go the whole hog and move to Romford.

Tim *gasp* you mean you're a... a South Londoner? Horrors!

GSE - good point.

Billy, oh why? I'd have thought the Dalston Oxfam blog was right up your street.

LC, I was bit trepidatious when I googled the street and the first link was an article about this woman who lived there being mugged by a teenage crackhead prostitute. At 8.30 am. I won't hear a word against Leytonstone.

This Guardian article could push you either way.

Oi LC, what's so wrong about Romford? :p

Annie, move to Norwich. Gwan!

Actually, having said that, now that I think about it, the only time anybody ever tried to mug me was in Dalston. He wasn't a very good mugger though, all I had to do was tell him to fuck off and he gave up.

Don't really know Leytonstone that well - I used to live round the corner in Forest Gate for a few years. The whole area seems a bit suburban compared to Dalston.

I am a South londoner and I would still say Dalston. I mean, what's the actual point of Leytonstone? School trips to Epping Forest, that's what.

Of course, according to the New York Times, the place to be is Deptford:

Have lived in Leyton - handy for Central Line and Walthamstow market but that's about it. Dalston - it's the new place to be. xx
