What are they doing to London?

Gloooooom

Things in London that are closing down - the world is changing and I don't like it one bit - it's all getting homogenised, glossy and corporate, bland and boring. Stop selling our city out to developers who don't care about it! Say no say no!

RIP the New Piccadilly.

RIP the allotments on the Olympic site.

RIP Greenwich Market

RIP Ridley Road Market (probably)

RIP proper pubs with 1 old man with no teeth and his dog.

RIP Camden Passage

RIP greasy spoons that aren't repackaged and retro

RIP the Streatham ABC, art deco cinema turned into flats.

Anything you'd like to add whilst I'm in this mood of mourning?

Camden Passage is a particular outrage. Apparently it's going to be a mega Jack Wills.

Tea shops and coffee bars that are neither corporate nor pretentious.

The Troy Club on Hanway Place - a long time favourite with journalists looking for one more pint in the small hours, when everywhere else had closed. It was the only watering hole in London where the barman ever remembered my name.

Once late-night drinking was legalised, it was the beginning of the end. Sniff.

Oh no! I had no idea Camden Passage was going. Bastards!

RIP The Old Old Dairy, my local on Stroud Green Road, before they gentrified it and hiked the prices up.

RIP London Astoria
RIP London Astoria 2
RIP Metro Club

BASTARDS!

ooOOoo woe, all my fave haunts from when I lived in London, Troy bar, Pollo, New Piccadilly. I was hoping to one day take my kids to where their father wooed me....*sniff*

We've still got some old man pubs and greasy spoons (and a mega-mall but we don't talk about that much)

I'd never heard of Jack Wills before GSE, how did that one escape me? There was a lot of resistance when All Saints opened there - it was the thin edge of the wedge.

Right, Bowleserised - I'd like to recommend Leila's shop, which is a lovely Polish cafe near Arnold Circus, if you're ever in town. My dream cafe, with great staff.

Thanks Em, for the Dive Bar, and Pollo, I knew I'd forgotten some. Is it just we're getting old, or is it really changing?

LC, I've never once been in an after-hours drinking club in London, bah. Or a secret one. Or one where you had to know where the door was, or the codeword. I'm missing out. I did disgrace myself horribly in Hanway Place on my sister's hen night years ago, though.

Hi, Inwardly Confused - oh noooo! That is sad. Where did he woo you, in Pollo? Cheapskate!!

Billy, maybe it's that the developers are closing in more on East London, being close to the City and Canary Wharf - I'll have to take a trip to West London for authentic pubs and greasy spoons...

We used to go to the New Piccadilly for lunch most days and late drinks at the Troy after boozing it up at the Comedy, midnight pasta at Pollo.......*weeps* thems were the days.

Gnocchi at Pollo, burning your hand on the plate :-(

Are there still Stock Pots?

I've no connection to London (other than as an occasional tourist) but it's always sad to see places with character replaced by the corporate and shiny.

Also, I HATE bloody Jack Wills and it's spin-off, Aubin & Wills.

All Saints? Is that the one that looks like a dungeon?

It won't be any consolation but I was in The French on Monday and apart from a decent Alsace Blanc, it's the same as it ever was.

OMG Stockpots! I had forgotten about those, proper old fashion almost war time like 'dinners'...had many lunches there too.

Tsk, Arabella - let us know next time! Yes the French is still hanging on in there. Will watch it like a hawk. Marsha, yes it looks like a dungeon. I like their clothes, but they're frighteningly expensive.
