Parquet Anchovy *

Oh joy! Point Break is on the telly.

Reasons to love this film:
  • Vicarious thrill seeking - I will never go surfing/rob a bank/sky dive (especially without a parachute) but seeing it in the cinema on the big screen was as close as you can get. I love the way old Kathryn Bigelow keeps upping the adrenaline stakes.
  • Keanu running along the beach in a wetsuit. His run is just wrong. We kept rewinding the video to have hysterics.
  • The image of one of the bank robbers in a Reagan mask torching everything in front of him. Sly little bit of political comment sneaked in there.
  • Its utter, utter silliness.
  • Its utter, utter macho-ness. ('Too much testosterone around here' remarks the heroine at one point.)
  • The utter cheesiness of Patrick Swayze as a philosophizing criminal. 'That's Bodhi - he'll take you to the edge. Past it...'

Isn't it just marvellous though? I normally hate these kind of films so they must be doing something right, although I am occasionally laughing out loud.

You can't run properly in a wetsuit, the chafing is extreme.

That may be because mine's too tight of course...

Oh you lucky people! That is a great film. I always love Keanu´s terrible acting. My favourite is him in Dangerous Liasons when he gives John Malkovic a big hug and you can see he wants to say "dude" at the end of the line à la Bill and Ted!!

Oh it was so good - Dave and I watched it and laughed quite a lot. I love that Antony Kiedis is in this film as well as one of the "bad" gang at the beginning. My heart did skip a beat however when Keanu's playing football with the boyz on the beach and his t-shirt is just a little too short and you see some navel. He does look quite hot in this film - till the end and he turns into a surfer with knarly hair.

That skydiving scene in Point Break wasn't as thrilling as seeing Roger Moore and Jaws wrestling for a 'chute in Moonraker.

Watching that on the big screen as a child made me desensitised to the arial frollicks of Keanu & co.

Did you know that Roger Moore had an eyebrow stunt double for his 007 films?

The film that bought us the immortal line "young, dumb and full of cum."

I find Point Break quite annoying as Mr Violet's ex, also my friend, used to think it was amazing and whenever it's on he seems to get us confused and spends ages going "ooh, Point Break's on, calm down, calm down" and suchlike. And I have to have a hissy fit and it's all undignified.

We actually watched it for the first time last night though and I spent the whole time barking "But that's ridiculous! That man's clearly going to die!" I don't think I quite got into the spirit.

They reprise the end in a marvellous fashion in Hot Fuzz, if you're interested.

It is marvellous Billy, especially Keanu's acting.

Greavsie, stop it, you tease!

Me too Em - I think Keanu is most unfairly underrated - future generations will realise that he was not a terrible actor but in fact employing a Brechtian distancing technique to comment on the vacuity of his characters...

Bad Sar - or else that he was quite hot and his acting doesn't really matter.

Hi Istvanski! I have very fond memories of Moonraker, as my mum took me and my whole class to see it for my 8th birthday. Didn't Jaws have a little girlfriend with plaits and braces in this one? (Looking it up on IMDB, it states that Bond's love interest is called 'Holly Goodhead'. I'm not making it up.)

Wyndham - Keanu will never live that line down, not if he lives to be 90.

Violet - tsk, Mr Violet is breaking all relationship rules, & I cannot blame you for not getting into it. It is better on the big screen, when you can get carried away by the spectacle more...

Realdoc, Simon Pegg is always good at paying homage to the movies...
