Nightmayor

Oh, for fuck's sake.

The idiots have taken over the asylum.

I feel it in my bones that this was because of people pissed off at the congestion charge, and for no other reason. Like little children reacting in a strop. Stupid bloody short-sighted idiots. Raaaargh!

If I'd have realised it was a 2 horse race I would have voted for Ken...

Can't bear the thought of seeing that guppy face all over the papers and the tv for the next four years.

Even worse is the thought of having to see David Cameron's triumphant, gloating face all over the papers and television over the next month. Still, gives us time to get used to him before he becomes Prime Minister, I suppose.

Also even worse - the number of people around here who voted for the BNP.

The BNP? Oh lord. It's not just that they're racist and ignorant, it's that they're so clearly very very stupid...

Yes, a lot of this is Ken being punished for extending the congestion charge into Kensington & Chelsea, and for his 4X4 taxing plan. It was pretty inevitable, but that didn't stop him going ahead with it, which I admire.

(Although I'm quite conflicted about the fact that I hate Tony Blair for acting on the very same principle with Iraq...hmm...)

If people voted for Boris on the strength of his policies and his ability to do the job, I wouldn't have minded. But if people voted him 'for a laugh', or because he's funny on HIGNFY, as seems to be the suggestion, then they deserve everything they're going to get. Idiots.

Has there been an election?
I've been hibernating.

I hear he's going to appoint the Duke of Edinburgh as his Ethnic Minority Liaison Officer.

Also rumours of the new Urban Regeneration Officer being the monster from Cloverfield.

Anyone who voted for Johnson because they hate the congestion charge is an idiot because he's not going to get rid of it.

I was reading an article featuring an interview with the leader of Hammersmith council and I quite like him (although he's a Tory!). I'd have preferred him to fucking Johnson.

You had the opportunity of fucking Johnson, Billy? Do elaborate, old chap...

Honestly, I leave London for 3 days, and I return to this! It is cruelly ironic that Ken actually got more votes this time round than he did last.

I hope that I will be pleasantly surprised and that Boris turns out to be a good mayor. As much as I hate the Tories, I'm not exactly happy with Labour at the moment. And as much affection as I had for Ken, I think he's had his day and should've let someone else stand. The Lib Dems should've fielded a stronger alternative. I could go on.

Yes. And, yes.

I can't believe how much this has upset me. I think it's the memories of 1979 - 1997. I could weep, I really could.

I know how you feel Marsha, I'm feeling pretty gloomy too. Though I think I got it wrong and he's only inflicted on us for 2 years (though apparently this is intended as his stepping stone to the Cabinet...)

Annie, I don't think there's any mistake. He's been elected for four years, hasn't he?

Disappointed at people's political docility. Why did only 45% of voters turn out?

Annie said...

I'm not sure. I thought it was, then I remembered that Ken was re-elected, so maybe it's for 2? Anyone care to enlighten us? People are apathetic in this country... to think they are descended from Vikings...

Unknown said...

The really depressing thing about the 45% turnout was that it was relatively high compared to turnout in general elections.

No, it is four. Ken had two four-year terms. Yes, the British are politically lazy. I suppose it's a spin-off from feeling secure about the robustness of democracy there, but it's still grim.

Is Boris's banning booze on public transport his opening gambit at being Mayor Giuliani-like?

Annie said...

In 36 years of London living and commuting I've never ever seen anyone drink on public transport, (so if they are doing it, they're doing it discreetly, it's not really a problem,) so it's a flashy attention-seeking meaningless gesture. Now if it was KFC/Macdonalds he'd be putting his money where his mouth is...
