Every child deserves a childhood

The news about Oliver Postgate combined with a highly depressing news report on knife crime and gangs recruiting kids as young as 8, combined to get me thinking...

Currently making myself unpopular at work, and about to make myself unpopular (er, even more unpopular) on the internets - yes I hate it when people nag me for money for charidee too, but just thought I'd draw your attention to Kid's Company, what you do next is up to you - run by an amazing woman called Camila Batmanghelidjh, it was set up to take care of the many, many children in London who come from broken homes and tough backgrounds and basically helps them and gives them somewhere to go. The care and attention they get from Kid's Company stops them from turning into violent scary nutters as adults and gives them a chance in life.

Their work goes on all year round, but on Christmas Day they take in 1500 (that's ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED) children who'd otherwise have nowhere to go, give them Christmas dinner and a present. Click here for more information and here about donations.

I remember hearing an interview with Camila Batmanghelidjh on the radio and she was, indeed, very impressive. Will forward details to everyone I've ever met.

And, speaking of gangs, did you hear this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_7777000/7777993.stm (sorry I can't link properly)?
The victim was raped by gang members some of whom, when not in the gang, she said were nice even. And the pressure of the gang would see them rape a girl who was practically a friend. Which is, obviously, not to excuse the wickedness of what they did. But, yes, gangs. Seriously shit.

I've been paying youtube homage to Oliver Postgate ever since being alerted to the news of his death by you and Tim via Google reader. A life well lived.

But, what do you mean? Unpopular on the internet? Surely you've never evoked a single cross word.

Thanks, ducky. What was heart-breaking about this report was this gang-leader saying how it was easy to recruit kids, because being in a gang gave them love and support and backup that they didn't have otherwise. Just shows that human beings need to be part of a family at any cost, even a family that will make you run drugs or demand you put your life on the line for them.

Well no, no controversy here at Slaminsky, more in the sense of 'not very popular', like the geeky girl at school with not so many friends. But it's probably part of a more general trend in blogs.
