Play on, playette

We were talking about how much we hated, HATED, R&B. Not R&B of Aretha and Stevie Wonder, not R&B of Motown and Atlantic, but the modern, over-produced, slick, bland aural wallpaper that they seem to play on rotation in every clothes shop. Bleeeurgh...

But it got me thinking about the few modern R&B tracks I do like, so here they all are, squished into one handy Mix Tape for your listening pleasure. To be listened to whilst wearing very tight hotpants and a push-up bustier.

My glorious back catalogue of Mixtapes still available. Stick them on your mp3 player! Jog around the park to them/sweeten your tube journey/sing along in the car...

No Diggitty - Blackstreet - this is the one that got me on an R&B kick. We were dancing to it at Beachdown and haven't been able to get it out of my head. They pinched the melody from Bill Wither's Grandma's Hands. And they are some seriously soulful singers.

When You're Near - Guru - from the slightly cheesy but quite effective tour around 90s New York that was Jazzmattaz Volume 1

Keep Their Heads Ringing - Dr Dre - rude! Very rude, but very catchy.

Irreplaceable - Beyonce kicks her boyfriend out for being unfaithful, with some dignity.

Yeah! Usher - R&B mixed with Crunk. Whatever that is.

Angola - Cesaria Evora & Carl Craig - not strictly speaking R&B, more a palate cleanser. It rocks.

Anonymous, I deleted your comment. People are allowed to disagree with me on my blog, but not when they are anonymous and rude– it’s discourteous. (Plus your comment was clearly nonsense.)

Hey, like your tape. And your blog. Still, you've pissed me off because I was thinking only this morning that i must write a post about hating that shit they call R&B these days.

No Diggity, in particular, is a worthy exception.

No Diggity is nothing short of brilliant. I like the skittering beats of R&B but the vocals have far too much melisma. It's like listening to Gregorian chants (about no good men)

Ah No Diggity - I LOVE that song or should I say choooone?

xx

Hi Andrew! Merci... ooh go on post about the sorry state of R&B, it needs to be said...

Billy, melisma now - it's not every day I get to hear a new word *rushes off to dictionary.com*

Yes you're right, too much melisma. Like Whitney or Mariah on one of their barn-storming ballads.

Rosie, hurrah! It makes me happy when people listen to it. (It wasn't that exciting, but anonymity annoys.)

RoMo - it most certainly is a choooone... x

Emordino, you listened to them? Aw, I'm so pleased...

Ironically, I am a staunch defender of RnB, yet hate a couple of your choices! Um... sorry. In my defence, No Diggity reminds me of a period of school, and represented everything I despised. The sound of posh trendy kids driving off in their BMWs while I had to go and catch the bus. Bitter? Moi?

And I find anything with Lil Jon on it utterly deplorable. So Yeah! fails on that front, I'm afraid.

Don't even like that Beyonce track very much either. Heheh. What an awkward git I am. The other mixtapes are a treat though! Thanks for listing them again, will download them all...

Del, but did you like Angola? Or did you not get that far? If you can't bear to listen to it to the end (unfortunately hard to forward through switchpod) I heartily recommend downloading it.

I love R'n'B, there's so much good stuff out there. It's just that there's loads more bad stuff, it gets a bad rap.

Nice mix, thankees.
